Normal gait requires a proper function of the balance system. We feel unsteady, dizzy, or disoriented whenever something goes wrong with our ears (Infections, circulation problems, etc..) because our balance is controlled through signals going to the brain from:

  1. The eyes
  2. The inner ear (vestibular system)
  3. The sensory systems of the body (such as the skin, muscles, and joints).

Any damage to these organs or to the neural pathways between them and the brain will cause dizziness or vertigo.

Consultation regarding Balance problems:

It is advised to visit Dr. Nanor if you feel:

  • Dizziness: a sensation of light-headedness, or of losing your balance, or a sense of feeling unsteady.
  • Vertigo: a type of dizziness in which there is a sense of movement or spinning. Changing position, can make it seem worse. Vertigo may be accompanied by nausea and vomiting .
  • Repair of the eardrum
  • Hearing loss.
  • Tinnitus.

VNG, VHIT, cVEMP and oVEMP are all balance tests which are performed to determine:

  1. The cause of the symptoms
  2. Where the problem is in the balance system?
  3. What has changed in the balance system? Is it temporary or permanent?

VNG is done with a goggle fixed firmly over your eyes, tracking and recording your eye movements with camera.

The most common cause of vertigo is benign paroxysmal positional vertigo, or BPPV, which occurs when crystals in the inner ear become dislodged and move freely in the inner ear. BPPV is easily treated in the office by re-positioning your head in a certain way so that the crystals fall back into place.

Meniere’s disease:

One of inner ear disorders which manifest as spontaneous attacks of vertigo, pressure in the ear, hearing loss and a ringing sensation in the ear.

Vestibular Neuronitis:

Spontaneous Vertigo that develops over seconds, minutes or hours and is accompanied by nausea / vomiting, gait instability, nystagmus, and head motion intolerance and persists for a day or more review.

Treatment will depend on the diagnosis:

  1. Medication
  2. Repositining maneuvers
  3. Diet and lifestyle changing
  4. Surgery
  5. Physio therapy

Do not forget if the snoring is left untreated, it can cause significant health issues leading to life and job impairment!

Obstructed Sleep Apnea

“Apnea” means “without breath” and  is caused by relaxation of the tongue  /  soft palate  /  throat muscles in such way that the airway to the lungs is blocked. The sleeper is unable to catch a breath for 10 seconds or longer leading to crucial parts of the body (brain, heart etc.) being without oxygen.

Most of us during sleep experience an occasional period with out breath, but if it is more than 15 episodes per hour it is too much and require immediate medical treatment.

How do I know if I have sleep Apnea?

Sleep apnea could affect all of us, including infants, without really noticing it. A definite diagnosis can be made only by a proper sleep study. A good night sleep is not the same in the hospital as it is at home. There fore, as a first line basic screening test we recommend our patients undergo sleep study at home. The sleep monitor will be delivered to your home, fitted and explained to you. Dr. Levante will discuss the findings with you and give you advise about your specialized treatment protocol.

Surgical Treatment

In most cases the blocked or narrowed airway causes a massive soft tissue vibrations which is generate noise. The goal of the surgery is to identify the narrowest point, and create smooth airflow to avoid turbulence. It may involve removing the tonsils, adenoids, uvula or excess tissue at the back of the throat. In addition, nasal surgery can be performed to correct nasal septal deviation or to reduce the size of the nasal turbinates.

The most common mechanical obstructive component in our airways

  • Adenoid / Tonsil enlargement
  • Small or collapsing nostrils
  • Deviated nasal septum
  • Enlarged nasal turbinate and/or nasal polyps
  • Large soft palate or uvula
  • Obstruction at the back of the tongue
  • Abnormality around the voice box

The location of the obstruction could be identified during your consultation with Dr. Levente

In most cases the obstruction is multifactorial, there fore surgical assessment will only be successful if it is followed by lifestyle changes.

The adenoid tissue is located at the back of your nose and is a part of your immune system which helps fight infection and protects your body from bacteria and viruses. Adenoids may become swollen due to recurrent infection / allergy. The enlarged adenoids can cause severe discomfort and start to interfere with your child daily life by blocking their nose mostly at night, main taining recurrent infections and causing permanent hearing loss.
An adenoidectomy is a minor procedure performed by the newest technology therefore your child will stay in our hospital only for a couple hours.

Tonsillar surgery

The tonsils are small lumps of tissue located at the back ofthe throat as part of the immune system,. If the child had recurring bouts of tonsillitis, it could be enlarged and cause blockage in the airway or maintain long standing infection.
Therefore reducing its size by shaving or its removal is recommended. The advantage of tonsillar size reduction against the standard tonsillectomy is the reduced risk of postoperative bleeding and much less pain.

Ventilation Tube - Grommet Insertion

Our ear is connected to the back of the nose to maintain an equal pressure inside and outside in the ear, which is required for proper hearing. When you swallow a “click” or “pop” sensation in the ear indicates that the tube is functioning normally. If the Eustachian tube is blocked, the air in the middle ear slowly absorbs and the eardrum will retract. Eventually the ear will be filled by fluid to protect the eardrum and middle ear bones. Latter on it will change to a dull pain. if the fluid remains there for a longer time period, it will become like “glue” and could will cause reduced hearing. And most updated  technology to do your tonsillotomy.

The “glue ear” can be presented as:

  • Poor hearing
  • Poor speech development
  • Recurrent infections

Advantage of the Grommet insertion:

  • Ventilating “aerating” the middle ear
  • Reducing secretions in the middle ear
  • Allowing better eardrum vibration “function”

This gives the ear a chance to recover. Usually, with in one year the Grommet will spontaneously dislodge and fall out once a the normal tube function is reestablished.
