Health Tips

Written by Dr.Medhat Shalabi, Consultant - Anaesthesiology

The enhanced recovery programs aim to improve patient care and decrease the length of hospital stay following surgical operations. We are trying to make the journey of having an operation as natural as possible also improve the patient experience and satisfaction.

After the operation

  • Patient is looked after by the recovery nurse to ensure immediate satisfactory recovery after surgery.
  • Patient is offered sips of water
  • Nurses  make sure that patients  are feeling warm and comfortable
  • Making sure that the patient is not in pain.

 Mobilization/ getting out of bed

One of the most important advances in the care of patients who are exposed to surgery is the very keen encouragement of the patients to get out of bed and be mobile as soon as possible after the operation.

This is essential part of prophylaxis against the feared complication of formation of blood clots after operation.

Also the mobilization helps a great deal for the intestinal movement and to be able to eat and drink immediately after having an operation.

Eating and drinking after the operation

Modern anesthesia and surgery now allow most patients to start to eat and drink immediately after the operation.

Mobilization is essential to start eating and drinking.

The key words for eating are:

  • As the patient can tolerate
  • None distending in order to avoid trapped wind
  • None constipating diet

an example  Fat free yoghurt , soup, fruits and  vegetables, chamomile tea, etc.

It is important that patients drink unless they feel sick, and they can start drinking sips of water in recovery. A few hours after the operation they can start to eat if they wish. Patients  should aim to eat there evening meal sitting in the chair not on the bed. This will help to prevent indigestion and trapped wind.

Pain control

Good pain control improves patients recovery as they can walk about, breathe deeply, eat and drink, feel relaxed and sleep well. Patients will be given different pain killers which helps in different ways.

The anaesthetist will discuss these options with patients before the operation.

In AZHD our very experienced anesthesia team has particular interest in the management of post-operative pain and use state of the art modern and evidence based techniques for that purpose.

Feeling sick

After the operation patient may feel sick or may vomit. Patient  will be given medication during the operation to reduce this, but if they feel sick they should speak to the nursing team who will be able to give them something to help a lot.

Monitoring

To help monitor how well patients are recovering after their operation.

While patients are in hospital we will check their blood pressure, pulse , pain score at rest and during movement and temperature regularly. We will also check how much fluid patients are taking in.

Discharge

Patients should make sure that everything is in place ready for them to go home. They  will need to ensure that someone is able to collect them to take them home and that someone is  with them  when they  are first discharged. All discharge medication will be ready before the patient goes home.

After Going Home

It is advisable that patients wear their support stockings at least for a week.
