What is Down’s Syndrome?
Down syndrome is one of the most common genetic disorders to occur in newborns. This disorder is most often caused by an abnormal division of the cell resulting in an extra full or partial copy of chromosome 21. Besides affecting developmental changes and physical appearance, it can also cause heart and digestive problems.
There is no definitive scientific research that indicates that Down syndrome is caused by the parents’ activities or any environmental factors prior or during pregnancy.
Screening for Down syndrome can be performed as early as 11 to 14 weeks of pregnancy.
It is important to start to take of Down’s Syndrome as soon as possible after a diagnosis, as your child will require the support of a team of medical experts who are able to provide the care that your child needs. Each case of Down Syndrome is managed through a personalized treatment plan to ensure that we provide the utmost support.

What to expect?
You may experience a range of emotions, including solicitude, anger, fear, denial, and melancholy as soon as you learn your child has Down syndrome. You may not know what to expect, and you may worry about your ability to care for a child with a disability. Information and support are the best ways to deal with emotions such as fear and worry.
What are the steps to consider?
Ask your healthcare provider about early intervention programs in your area. Look for the available resources provided by the Ministry of health and prevention in UAE or in your own country to help develop motor, language, and social skills
Seek support groups, internet support groups, social and leisure activities, family member, and other families who are dealing with the same issues. UAE has support groups of parents of children with Down’s syndrome and professionals from medical and educational sectors, and volunteers. They aim to support families, create awareness, and train parents with the international standards of special needs.
Learn about educational options to choose the appropriate school for your child. UAE believes in an educational system which is inclusive for all students. Schools for people of determination are also available depending on the child’s needs. Decision of mainstreaming/specific schools will be taken upon the condition.
Always remember that your child’s abilities may be different from other children’s abilities, but with your support and some practice your child may be able to perform some basic house chores.
