What is Hernia?

A hernia occurs when an internal part of the body pushes through a weakness in the muscle or surrounding tissue wall. Hernias are classified as simple surgeries under general surgery, however a hernia can become very complicated if left untreated. In such cases the surgeon needs to be very experienced in hernia surgery.

Different Types of Hernias:
The Inguinal hernia: It occurs when a fragment of the intestine bulges out from a fragile spot in the abdominal muscles.

The Umbilical hernia: It occurs when a fragment of the intestine bulges out of the umbilical opening in the abdominal muscles. It is generally harmless.

The Hiatus hernia: It occurs when a fragment of the stomach pushes up into your chest by getting through an opening in the diaphragm, which is the thin sheet of muscle that separates the chest from the tummy.

Other types of Hernia include Femoral, incisional, and epigastric hernias. Hernias can also occur in children, however only children above the age of 4 are treated through surgical methods and it usually occurs with Umbilical hernia.

Open Surgery
In the open surgery procedure, the surgeon creates an incision in the groin of the patient and pushes the removed tissue back into the abdomen. The surgeon then sutures the weakened area and finalizes the operation by closing the opening. The procedure could also be performed under local or general anesthesia. Patients are typically required to stay in the hospital for one day and are expected to go back to normal activities within a week. Heavy physical activities should be avoided for at least one month.

Laparoscopic Surgery
The laparoscopic surgery is carried out through multiple small incisions in the abdominal region of the patient. The patient’s abdomen is inflated with gas to help supply a wider area throughout the operation. A small camera is located in one of the incisions, which grants the surgeon access to see the area. Laparoscopic surgery is known to be a minimally invasive procedure. Patients are typically expected to stay at the hospital for one day and can go back to normal activities in two days. Heavy physical activities should be avoided by patients for at least one month.

Risks of Untreated Hernia
If left untreated hernia can become very complicated. It can result in difficulties, specifically when it is obstructed and strangulated, or when it is a recurrent hernia. Laparoscopic and robotic surgery have become extremely popular treatments within the last 10 years.
