About Neonatology

What is Neonatology?

Neonatology is the branch of medicine dealing with the delivery of medical care to babies that are born prematurely or born with various congenital diseases.

At AL Zahra Hospital Dubai, we bring together state of the art neonatal technologies with expert subspecialized neonatology staff and latest medical practices to ensure your baby is on their fastest and safest way to full recovery.

Our NICU accepts babies born as low as 26 weeks of pregnancy. The neonatology division treats babies between 0 to 28 days old. We provide comprehensive care for premature and high-risk babies, offering various medical and surgical services to our small patients.

In addition, we provide state-of-the-art medical technologies, including the various modes of mechanical ventilation, ranging from non-invasive ventilation to conventional and high frequency ventilation, diagnostic evaluation and treatments.

Every attempt is made to deliver care in a manner that fosters optimal growth and development of the newborn infant as well as incorporates the family into care plan initiatives.

Supported by a wide range of pediatric sub-specialty consultants, Al Zahra hospital Dubai neonatology services are delivered by dedicated staff of neonatal nurses in collaboration with subspecialty-trained neonatologists.

The scope of care delivered is a full continuum, beginning with antenatal consulting for families who will potentially have an infant in the NICU. The NICU provides intensive care including the provision of high frequency oscillatory ventilation, conventional ventilation, most medical, surgical, pediatric sub-specialties, and multi-system support, making the Al Zahra Hospital NICU one of the most potent centers for premature babies in Dubai.

We partner with families to provide the most appropriate daily care and decision-making for their infants.

When the patient no longer needs intensive care, medical care will be provided in the most appropriate place for that infant and family, whether it will be a continued stay in the NICU, or in a special care nursery that can better meet all the needs of the infant and family.

The NICU does provide transitional care to assist families in making the transition from illness to wellness. While in transitional care, the family receives complete preparation for discharge including teaching, coordination of home care, coordination of community resources, and arrangements for all needed follow ups including follow up in the neonatal high-risk clinic.

In the Neonatal High-Risk clinic, we provide RSV prophylaxis (Synagis) as indicated and monitor growth and development of NICU grads.

Chest CT Scan

Although pulmonary medicine only began to evolve as a medical specialty in the 1950s, William Welch and William Osler founded the ‘parent’ organization of the American Thoracic Society

One of the first major discoveries relevant to the field of pulmonology was the discovery of pulmonary circulation. Originally, it was thought that blood reaching the right side of the heart passed through small ‘pores’ in the septum into the left side to be oxygenated, as theorized by Galen; however, the discovery of pulmonary circulation disproves this theory, which had previously been accepted since the 2nd century. Thirteenth century anatomist and physiologist Ibn Al-Nafis accurately theorized that there was no ‘direct’ passage between the two sides.
