Al Zahra Hospital Dubai is proud to highlight an internationally published surgical innovation developed by Dr. Sharda Prata Ghosh, Consultant Obstetrician and Gynecologist, aimed at supporting the management of postpartum hemorrhage while helping preserve the uterus and future fertility whenever clinically appropriate.
The innovative technique, known as the Ghosh Suture, or Alternate Sequential Surgical Suture Tensioning Technique (ASSTT), has been published in peer-reviewed international medical journals and presented at major medical conferences, including AICOG 2026 and the International Congress of Gynecology and Women’s Health – Dubai 2025.
Advancing the Management of Postpartum Hemorrhage
Postpartum hemorrhage (PPH) is one of the most serious complications that can occur following childbirth and remains a major cause of maternal morbidity and mortality worldwide.
Severe cases require rapid medical and surgical intervention to control bleeding. In certain circumstances, a hysterectomy may become necessary to save the mother’s life, resulting in the permanent loss of fertility.
The Ghosh Suture was developed as a practical surgical technique designed to help control severe uterine bleeding while preserving the uterus whenever medically safe and appropriate.
A Fast and Practical Surgical Technique
One of the key advantages of the Ghosh Suture technique is its relatively simple and rapid application.
The technique uses sequential and balanced tension of surgical sutures to create effective compression of the uterus without requiring additional uterine incisions or highly complex surgical steps.
The procedure can be performed in approximately four minutes, providing obstetric surgeons with an additional option when rapid intervention is essential.
According to the published clinical experience, the technique has been used in more than 100 cases of uterine atony, as well as selected cases involving placenta accreta, with promising results in controlling hemorrhage and reducing the need for hysterectomy in appropriate patients.
Supporting Mothers and Preserving Future Fertility
Dr. Sharda Prata Ghosh emphasized that every minute can be critical when managing postpartum hemorrhage. The objective of the technique is to provide physicians with a fast and practical method to control bleeding while preserving the uterus whenever it is safe for the patient.
The innovation reflects an important principle in modern maternal care: protecting the life of the mother while also considering her long-term reproductive health whenever possible.
