FAQs

What is minimally invasive surgery?

Minimally invasive surgery (MIS) is a modern surgical technique that allows doctors to perform operations through very small incisions, rather than the large cuts used in traditional open surgery.

Key Features:

Small incisions: Often just a few millimeters long.

Specialized tools: Surgeons use instruments like laparoscopes (tiny cameras) and endoscopes that provide high-definition, magnified views inside the body.

Precision: The surgeon controls fine instruments to operate with accuracy while minimizing damage to surrounding tissues.

Benefits:

Less pain after surgery

Reduced blood loss

Smaller scars

Shorter hospital stays

Faster recovery time

Lower risk of infection

Common Uses:

Gallbladder removal (laparoscopic cholecystectomy)

Hernia repairs

Appendectomy

Bariatric (weight loss) surgeries

Gynecologic procedures (e.g., hysterectomy, myomectomy)

Orthopedic and urologic surgeries

At Al Zahra Dubai, also offer robot-assisted minimally invasive surgery, where robotic systems give surgeons even greater precision and flexibility.

When is robotic surgery used?

Robotic surgery is usually chosen when surgeons want more precision, flexibility, and control than traditional minimally invasive or open surgery can provide. It’s not a surgery done by a robot alone—the surgeon is fully in charge, but they use a robotic system (like the da Vinci robot) as an advanced tool.

Situations Where Robotic Surgery is Used

Complex minimally invasive procedures
– When the anatomy is delicate, hard to reach, or requires extreme precision.

Oncology (cancer) surgeries
– Prostate, kidney, bladder, colorectal, gynecologic, and certain thoracic cancers, where sparing healthy tissue is critical.

Gynecologic surgeries
– Hysterectomy, myomectomy, endometriosis treatment, pelvic floor repair.

Urologic surgeries
– Prostatectomy, partial nephrectomy, pyeloplasty.

General surgery
– Bariatric (weight loss), gallbladder, hernia, esophageal, and colorectal procedures.

Cardiothoracic surgery
– Certain heart valve repairs, lung resections, and mediastinal tumor removals.

Head & neck surgery (selected cases)
– For tumors in difficult-to-access areas.

 Why It’s Preferred

  • High-definition 3D view of the surgical field
  • Greater range of motion (robotic arms rotate beyond human wrists)
  • Enhanced precision & tremor filtration
  • Smaller incisions, less pain, quicker recovery compared to open surgery
